The British Science Association (BSA) is renowned for its CREST SuperStar Awards, which provide primary school pupils, aged 9-11, with the opportunity to tackle real-life STEM challenges. These awards encourage hands-on investigation and teamwork, culminating in a certificate of achievement that celebrates their efforts.
Introducing: DNA and the world around you challenges
Wellcome Connecting Science has developed a series of exciting activities for the awards, titled ‘DNA and the World Around You Challenges.’ These challenges dive into captivating STEM concepts, including:
- Understanding glittery contamination
- Exploring the sneeze zone
- Learning about ancient animals
- Investigating variation in the classroom
These resources are tailored to spark curiosity, build scientific skills, and engage young learners in meaningful discussions about the world around them.
Supporting primary schools in STEM education
As part of our commitment to encouraging a love for science, we’re offering to fund a Year 5 or Year 6 cohort, in partner schools, to participate in the CREST SuperStar Awards. This initiative provides an excellent opportunity for schools to access high-quality STEM resources and inspire pupils to explore science in a hands-on, practical way.
What are the CREST SuperStar Awards?
The CREST SuperStar Awards involve pupils completing 6 to 8 one-hour challenges, designed to enhance problem-solving skills and scientific thinking. A CREST SuperStar passport tracks their progress, and upon completing the challenges, pupils receive a certificate from the British Science Association to celebrate their achievements.
Through our partnership with the BSA, and by integrating innovative challenges into the CREST SuperStar Awards, we’re excited to continue to expand our programme of activity, aiming to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.
“
We’re delighted to be partnering with the British Science Association to provide an excellent opportunity for primary pupils to investigate topics related to our work at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. From glittery contamination to the sneeze zone, from ancient animals to variation in their classroom – there are lots of engaging and interactive resources for 9-11 year olds to get involved with, whilst completing their CREST SuperStar Award.
