IBD BioResource and Genetic Feedback

Date: 1 September 2023

A project developing an acceptable and feasible approach to the return of additional findings, with insight from a range of stakeholders, including researchers, clinicians, and IBD BioResource participants.

The return of results from genetic research has been a long-standing question in the development and implementation of genomic medicine. There is a growing ethics, policy and practice literature related to this, as well as practical experience. A particular issue relates to dealing with secondary or additional findings, i.e. those considered unrelated to the presenting condition.

Returning these results presents ethical, scientific, clinical and logistical challenges. These are currently being faced by the NIHR BioResource as they consider how to return additional findings from exome sequencing relating to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) research led by Carl Anderson at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

This project explores approaches to the return of additional findings with a range of stakeholders, including researchers, clinicians, and IBD BioResource participants.

The workshop was commissioned by Wellcome Connecting Science, in partnership with the NIHR Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) BioResource and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. It was designed and facilitated by Hopkins van Mil.
