Dates: Thursday 3 – Friday 4 April 2025
Would you like to gain an insight into how cells are grown and studied to understand human disease?
We have a great opportunity for young people to take part in a two day work experience opportunity in the Wellcome Sanger Institute’s Cellular Operations programme. Eight places are available, two in each of the following scientific areas: CRISPR Editing, Organoid Modelling, CRISPR Screening and Spatial Genomics.
This work experience is an introduction to molecular and cellular laboratories and is aimed at students that have little to no lab experience.
CRISPR Editing
Discover the power of CRISPR gene editing through a hands-on molecular biology project! During this placement, you will learn key techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, and molecular cloning, all while working towards designing and cloning your own plasmid guide RNA vector. Alongside practical lab work, you will gain insight into bioinformatics and explore how CRISPR is transforming genetic research. This project will provide a strong foundation in gene editing and an understanding of its applications in cutting-edge science.
Organoid Modelling
Are you interested in cutting-edge research on 2D and 3D tissue modelling? This placement offers hands-on experience in generating models of human tissue, with a focus on intestinal and endometrial tissues. You will work on a mini project aimed at exploring multiple techniques essential for cellular biology research.
During the placement, you will:
- Learn how to culture intestinal and endometrial tissues in 3D.
- Explore the foundations of 2D cell culture by working with stromal fibroblast cells.
- Use specialised imaging equipment to analyse the models.
This is a unique opportunity to engage in high-throughput cell biology research, contributing to models that support global scientific advancements in disease understanding. Come spend time with our experts and dive into the fascinating world of 3D research.
CRISPR Screening
Join an immersive project exploring how CRISPR technology is used to study cancer cells. During this placement, you will learn how to culture cancer cells, analyse different cellular models (from haploid lines to 3D organoids), and observe how CRISPR is applied to edit genes within these cells. Your focus will be on setting up a mini CRISPR screen to explore gene function, providing a practical introduction to one of the most powerful tools in modern genetic research.
Spatial Genomics
Spatial genomics combines molecular and morphological data to map gene expression within a tissue sample to the physical location in which it is occurring. This expands our knowledge of tissue structure and cellular interactions, allowing investigations into disease and development. During this placement you will work through the key steps within a spatial genomics laboratory workflow. This includes tissue processing, histology techniques and sample quality assessment. You will also be introduced to the cutting-edge spatial technologies used in the laboratory, such as Visium CytAssist and Xenium.
Who are the Cellular Operations work experience days for?
Applications are invited from A level / T-level students, by 9.00am on Monday 3rd March 2025. This work experience is an introduction to molecular and cellular laboratories and is aimed at students that have little to no lab experience.
Where is it taking place?
